FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

PCI Cards

Can a PCI card be used in a Virtual Machine ?

PCI cards cannot be used in a Virtual Machine (VM) environment due to the fact that the physical PCI bus is not directly accessable by the VM. Products like HyperPacket and HyperArray are suitable for use with VM's.

Can the OptiLogix PCI range of products fit in any PCI slot ?

Yes and No, our PCI boards can fit in standard 5V PCI slots. As the formfactor is half-length, it will usually fit any PC or Server that can house standard height cards. Note that although PCI slots are becoming less common (replaced by PCI Express slots), there are still modern motherboards that have one or two standard 5V PCI slots alongside multiple PCIe slots.

19" rack servers with passive backplanes are available with many 5V PCI slots. These 5V style PCI slots are usually colored white and have one notch close to the centre of the motherboard.

PCI slots that havetwo notches or one notch close to the edge of the motherboard are 3V3 style PCI slots and are not compatible with our PCI cards.

PCI Express Cards

Can the OptiLogix PCI Express range of products fit in any PCIe slot ?

Yes, our PCI Express boards can fit in any small (x1) PCIe slot up to the widest (x16) PCIe slots. As the formfactor is half-length, it will usually fit any PC or Server that can house standard height cards. For machines with reduced height we have some PCIe products available as "Low-Profile" models.

Can a PCI Express card be used in a Virtual Machine ?

PCI Express cards cannot be used in a Virtual Machine (VM) environment due to the fact that the physical PCIe bus is not directly accessable by the VM. Products like HyperPacket and HyperArray are suitable for use with VM's.

USB Devices

Can a USB device be used in a Virtual Machine ?

USB devices can be used in a Virtual Machine (VM) environment. However this is not recommended as its performance and stability can be affected by the virtualisation software. Products like HyperPacket and HyperArray are suitable for use with VM's.
